Roof System Exam

Did anybody else notice confusing language in the exam when questions were about slope and pitch? It seemed like the course material went to great lengths to express that the terms are not interchangeable, but the exam was all over the place using ratios to express slope instead of fractions and other things like that.

Been some time for me Logan but even back then, some 15 years ago, slope and pitch were interchangeable.
My advice, learn them all but stick with one when reporting.

Yep… same takeaway. I was totally confused too. Not sure why they make such a point of trying to differentiate the two.

I’m not entirely sure why it matters at all to a home inspector, other than general knowledge.

I have not specified the slope or pitch in an inspection report, nor can I think of a good reason to other than saying “This is a 14/12 roof and too steep to climb safely”. Even then, who cares about the slope or pitch, what matters is it wasn’t walked.

I looked up the difference when the pitch of a roof is different calculation than roof slope.
Pitch compares the roof’s span to the rise, while slope compares rise and run.

To calculate pitch, you simply divide rise by span and display your result as a fraction. You’ll often hear experts express pitch as X over Y.
