When inspecting the plumbing I always check to see if the water softener has a bypass valve. Anyone know of a code that covers bypass valves on water softeners?

Nope. They are considered a ‘convenience’ as opposed to a ‘requirement’, thus, none that I am aware of.
Most system come with them.
