Sideways HVAC - would you include in report?

Would you write this up? Sideways HVAC unit

Not unless I checked the manual and it said that type of installation is prohibited. On a side note, based on previous experience, I can say that type of installation is likely allowed for that unit.

Look up the model number and get the installation instructions for that unit. Better photos, overview, closeup of unit label, etc would be helpful.

The advice to check the manual is good but from what I recall I see a lot that have something like, “approved for horizontal installation” on a sticker somewhere on the unit.

What would you “write up” about it?

The only thing I would add is if there isn’t an upward elbow within a few feet, that’s probably not a recommended installation. All those Rheems can be installed horizontally though. Check with the owners manual. You do have a picture of the model number? Looks more recent with that centered logo.

The “wrong” that I see in the photo is the horizontal flue vent.

Most Rheem furnaces can be installed horizontally as long as the air flow is right to left when facing the front of the unit.

As mentioned before, the installation instructions for the specific unit will dictate whether or not it is compatible with horizontal installation. Same goes for the AC EVAP coil.

Look up the model and serial number for both and you will have your answer.

And, if we’re being picky, there should be a sediment trap after the shut-off valve.

Unless it is in Colorado Springs…no sediment traps required in the Springs…

At least 1/2 of all furnaces I see are mounted sideways.

Horizontal Install for that Rheem 80 furnace may be OK, as long as the doors face sideways, not upwards. The one in your picture looks pretty common, but as others have said, check the model and year against the installation documents. I got a hold of a similar looking 80% model Installation manual and copied a page for the horizontal install (see below).

Yes. Also, if we are being picky the latch on the door on the right is missing a handle. Also the condensate drain line doesn’t have a vent.

And if we are being super picky, your photo is poorly lit and out of focus.

The OP could write up “installer neglected to rotate the Rheem logo”.

Most Rheems I see in this area have this factory sticker on them.
