Smoke Detector Wiring

I did an inspection at a rental house where I found the basement smoke detector was damaged and the other smoke detectors on the first and second floor did not work. The damage was isolated to the basement smoke detector only.

These smoke detectors were tied in together so if one goes off, they all go off. If one is damaged, does that mean that all the smoke detectors don't work like the x-mass lights I use to buy - if one bulb goes out none of the light bulbs work? Or is it designed if one doesn't work, all the rest of the smoke detectors still work - like the x-mass lights I buy now where only that bulb goes out and the rest stay lit.

I would think it's the bulbs I buy now and there is a problem with the electrical wiring to the smoke detectors.

What do you think?

Note: Breaker was on.

Kevin,

They can be wired both ways.

Was the power supplied on the second and third icon_question.gif

Wondering if it was cut off at the first one.

Not sure. It looks like the smoke detector alarm went off and somebody did what ever it took to turn it off. I seen one wire broke off. I would think smoke detectors would not only be wired up in series but also parallel. That way if damage is done to one smoke detector, the other will work.

I haven't looked to close at the wiring diagram yet, so I might not know what I'm talking about.
