Does anyone remember when telephone numbers used letters at the begining of the number?
ie: TR = Traingle, UL = Ullster, NI = Nightingale.
Yes…Our number was (Windsor) WI 66-777.
I just learned from the Discovery Channel Show - Foods That Made America, that Oreo cookies copied Hydrox.
I always thought Hydrox was a cheap imatation of Oreo.
My Uncle Joe was heavily involved with Sunshine Bakeries, makers of Hydrox.
Keebler bought them out & then discontinued them a few years later.
first one I remember was CH (cherry) plus 3 numbers, I dont remember the numbers…
The commander used to work for the phone company so in the last house we had a number of antique phones some of wich were wired to work, at one family gathering the grandsons found one of these working relics and wanted to give it a shot…unfortunately the only number they could think of dialing was 911…
Fond memories of dialing “0” and talking with an Operator;
Operator: “Hello, how can I help you?”
Me: " Yes, I would like to place a collect call to 555-5545"
Operator: " And your name please?"
Me: “Tom, I’m their son…”
Pause, then a phone rings and is answered “Hello?”
Operator: " Hello, collect call coming in from your son Tom, do you accept the charges?"
Reply: " Who? Never heard of him!!.." Click!
That operator could have been my lovely bride Tom , she tells me that back in the day they could actually sit there and listen to You conversation…
Listened to a lot conversations back when they had “party lines” Jim…
as did we all…
Reminds me of a commercial about 20 years ago I think during a super bowl.
-Collect call from “hadababyitsaboy”… Nope! ‘click’
Here it is… haha
