Here is a building science guy presenting the case that this problem is likely due to condensation problems as the result of unqualified installers, doing shoddy work, adding open-cell spray-foam insulation to very old homes in the UK. His conclusion is that this issue is unlikely to spread to the US. However, with how skittish home insurance companies and lenders are in the US, who knows.

Good video. I was unfamiliar with this guy. I learned a few things. For one, I’ve never seen foam applied to the thicknesses he describes, so I’ll be paying more attention to that.
