Vaulted ceiling with no attic space has black streaks that appear to follow the rafters. The room is kitchen/living room with a pellet stove for supplemental heat. could this be an old problem that just needs paint. concerned with a fix as this is my daughters place.
The house is haunted, those are ghosting streaks.
Search the forum for “ghosting”, discussed often.
Ghosting… likely from soot from the pellet stove.
Did you hear any strange noises from above?
Yes. As mentioned by the other folks. Definitely Ghost Stripes. Getcha one of those telescoping cleaning brushes, and have at it.
Also, may need to check that stove draft.
I’m going to take a wild guess and say it’s “Ghosting”…Google it.
Did you see how someone tried to cover to up?
only from the two granddaughters in the upstairs bedroom!!!
Thanks Jeffrey, i will check that link out
It will answer all of your questions.
Yes, my daughter just moved in in december.
Larry, do you think the draft on the stove can be the problem? It just goes out through the wall.
Pellet stoves have a sealed draft, I have one, and no smoke at all leaks out, unless the door seals are bad.
Agreed, I have one as well.
The problem can be many things e.g. plug-in air fresheners, unclean house, plain old dust, smoking, etc.
The particles in the air are drawn to the colder rafters/trusses because warmer air is drawn to colder air and sticks to the colder surface that has no insulation, or much less insulation.
With the pellet stove, If you have a power failure when the stove is burning you could get a small amount of smoke leakage,
And you could get a larger smoke leakage if the combustion air supply does not extend to the exterior. Smoke may also leak through the auger into the room.
If you have a piece of crap pellet stove. I have a top of the line Harman pellet stove. Mine is 6 years old I burn 5 tons a year and no problems as of yet.
The hopper door is sealed on ours. I haven’t noticed any smoke on the interior as of yet. We’ve been using ours for a little over a year.
Same here.
There is no mention of the age of the home or the pellet stove. They can both be a piece o’crapploa!!
