Student Discussion: How to Inspect Pools and Spas Course

In the article pool water pathogens it was interesting to note how chlorine does not kill all pathogens and up to take up to 10 days for some such as cryptosporidium to die. Also the potential hazards of ingesting pool water can not be understated.

Fire pits are also being incorporated into home pools and are just another item for inspection. These are potential areas for gas leaks from rust and in a wet environment. Need to check for the electrical system also to see if it is up to code also.

If you spend a few minutes watching the water of the pool you can figure out the flow of water in the pool/spa system. This is a good start for any inspector to see if the system even works at all. Also, you get a chance to do other inspections, like listening to the pump and check for visible leaks in the poll/spa system.

Pool Pump Leaking at Housing during and showed signs of physical damage to pool equipment pump. Pool Pump made abnormally loud whining noise upon activation by normal controls and or pool times. Pool pump also showed signs of numerous bubbles in pump basket. Pool pump would not prime without bleeding pool filter pressure release valve to bleed excess air from piping system.

Pool Safety Article: Each year, hundreds of young children die and thousands come close to death due to submersion in residential swimming pools due to inadequate pool barriers and or fencing. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has estimated that each year, about 300 children under the age of 5 drown in swimming pools. All residential pools should have adequate pool fencing that is a minimum of 48 inches tall, and an opening that would allow an object such as an infant’s head passage through the fence that is equal to a four (4) inch diameter sphere.

I learned about grounding and bonding for pool equipment. This will help with many future inspections. Lighting and wiring also helped me learn a lot of new things. Good course with a lot of valuable information to take with me.

While performing an inspection of the pool equipment I will follow my own check list to make sure that I provide my client with any details they should know about. One thing I will be looking for is the bonding of the equipment. I will also be checking for leakage or damaged equipment to make sure that there are no safety violations.

The article I have chosen is on garage inspection. I will definitely be keeping an eye on the attic framing above the garage to make sure it is as it should be. For example, making sure of the correct metal hangers are used with proper fasteners.

A DE filter is the most efficient type of filter commonly used in swimming pools. DE filters incorporate a large canister which holds a number of filter elements. As pool water is pumped through the filter particles are trapped on these elements. The filter assembly must be cleaned and recharged periodically by backwashing the unit and refilling with DE.

A pool skimmer is the first element in a swimming pool filtration system and serves the important role of trapping larger debris such as leaves, insects, any other items that should not be filtered by the pool filter. The skimmer contains a removable basket which should be removed and cleaned periodically.

Pool safety barriers are required in some Authorities Having Jurisdiction. The attached image of the missing barrier shows a pool where a barrier may be required. The barriers mainly keep children from entering the pool area unsupervised and thus preventing an accidental drowning.

Pool alarms are designed to warn adults when unsupervised children enter a pool. It is important for and inspector to tell clients of the different pool alarms available today. In 2007 , the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act took effect. Basically, it is a voluntary grant program encouraging states to write laws that call for pool alarms, door alarms, pool covers, and self-closing/self-latching gates. Unfortunately only three states have passed legislation, California, Connecticut and New York.

This is a picture of a cracked pool pump. With this crack, it could possibly not allow the pump to efficiently clean and circulate the water. May also allow air into the system with could cause bubbles in the pipes and pool.

After reviewing the underwater lighting section, I understand why it is important to have all junction boxes 4" above grave. You want to make all the exposed wiring connections with water proof wire nuts above the pool surface incase of flooding or overflow.

The pump work properly and we don’t found any leak in the plumbing system , fitting and unions correctly installation, the diffuser look clear and clean and the water flow is correct , the water circulation is normal and all the valves open

The electrical system is important in the inspection is the most danger system with the safety regulations , check the bonding , gfci we provide the safety for people, Installations and disconnect needs be regulated by the electrical code to provide safety

Pool pump systems
The water is pulled from the pool by a brass or plastic impeller that is shaft driven by an electric pump motor.on the way to be pump the water is under a vacuum, which creates the suction.after the water leaves the impeller, the water is put under pressure being pushed until it is released into the pool.

Safety Guidelines for home pools
Each year, hundreds of young children die and thousands come close to death due to submersion in residential swimming pools.all doors with direct access to pool through that wall should be equipped with an alarm which produces and audible warning when the door and it screen if present are opened.it should be a barrier.

Swimming Pool Barriers by Nick Gromicko and Kenton Shepherd
For safety and insurance reasons, every pool must be surrounded by a barrier which is in place to prevent non-adults from accessing the pool. Additionally an alarm must be present on all doors which have access to the pool area. All doors should have self closing devices to ensure no small children can wander into the pool area.
