Student Discussion: How to Perform Tree Inspections Course

The article on Tree Swing Inspection was good to remind me that the swing I and my kids use may not be as safe as we thought. I have inspected the rope and area for wear and possible dangers. This area checked out ok, but the tree was a willow. It is a large 10 inch dia. branch that is is alive and healthy. We are watching it closely for damage or decay. This was an eye opener article.

Watch for trees that have obvious decay. These trees can be very close to homes and may have been damaged through the construction process. Trees that are this far along really should be examined by an arborist and considered for removal.

As you can see in this photo, the base of the tree is dry, cracked, and deteriorated. Unpon further investigation it is noted that this has moved up the trunk, and into the branches. The base of the tree is hollowed out about half way through.

In this photo you can see the inspector inspecting the canopy of the tree from on top of the roof. Checking for loss of leaves and dead or dying branches will help to determine if the tree is having problems.

Small deciduous tree: This is the only tree in this yard. The neighborhood is relatively new with not many trees, but shrubs and bushes are more prevalent in this neighborhood. It’s important to check trees for rot, mold, or other WDOs that could affect the overall health of a tree.

Pine Beetles: Pine beetles live in western North America and with numerous amounts of beetles, can kill larger areas of pine trees in mountainous regions. Homes in mountain areas are especially susceptible to pine beetles. Trees with a heavy infestation should be removed and burned immediately.

This old elm tree has contracted Dutch Elm disease. It is a fungal disease of elm trees that is spread by elm bark beetles. When a tree get it the only solution is to cut it down. The beetles will ruin many trees in any area.

American elm was introduced to the U.S. in the early 1930. A Dutch pathologists discover that the elm tree disease was cause by a beetle, this is way it is call Dutch Elm disease or by a fungus called Ophiostoma ulm.

I chose a picture of a tree struck by lightning and is dead. This training was very helpful and informative. I respect the capacity of a certified arborist more after this incredible training that has helped establish the confidence needed to execute great inspections.

I chose the article pertaining to carpenter beetles from the Library of Inspection Articles. This article was very informative and provided a lot of information that can be used to execute great inspections.The article stated that,"female carpenter beetles can lay 50 to 100 eggs.

This picture shows two of the remaining Maple trees after the homeowner removed the third tree to free up space. At first, it looks like a multi-trunk, but in reality these trees were grown from seedlings by the homeowner and have been improperly spaced. This is evident in the stress marks on both trucks. The trees have grown away from each other to such an extreme the stress marks show at multiple horizontal locations.

Tree Inspection (Dead Limbs). Dead limbs are prone to fall and may cause injury, death or property damage. Additionally, dead limbs promote wood destroying insects. When inspecting trees, the inspector should wear a hard hat to protect his head, safety glasses to protect the eyes, and gloves to protect from insect bites.

On one of my first mentored inspection I observed this large tree in the front yard that the root system had lifted up the sidewalks and also got under the front porch and disrupted the foundation.It was also the direct route for the termites to enter the porch area and front of the house.Along with numerous other issues with the house the client backed out and ended the inspection.

Tree Dangers,in my past inspections I have observed and noted tree root uplifting sidewalks and foundations.Dead trees in the yards that need to be removed,lots of tree debris in gutters,gutters that have been damaged by branches and trees.I understand that inspecting trees is not part of the NJ SOP however if it looks like it caused or will cause damage to the house I do inspect and mention it.Recently a client failed to remove a dead tree from the from of his house and it blew over onto his BMW.I did stop to offer assistance but he had a tree guy coming.He admitted that he should have taken care of it before it fell.

Trees are all around us and we often take them for granted, without thinking too much about how dangerous they can be when not properly taken care of. This course has given me a much better understanding of how fungus kills trees and how I can better inform my clients about how to manage the trees in their own yards so they can enjoy them as much as I enjoy the trees over my pool.

I read the article “Digits and Hyphens in Inspection Reports.” This article tried to convey simple and practical guidelines for how to properly use numbers and digits as well as when to use a hyphen for describing different scenarios. It was informational.

Trees that are planted or begin to grow too close to a house can cause future damage to the foundation and structure. Home owners should be advised to remove any trees growing in too close proximity to the house. Once a root system has developed it can be very difficult to remove the tree. In some cases, it can be difficult to remove the tree and cause little to no damage to the foundation.

Some trees have innate problems. One such tree is the Bradford Pair. This is a popular tree in the Southeastern United States. These trees are especially prone to attack from beetles and consistently split down the middle when not properly pruned. Home Inspectors should make home owners aware of some of the issues with this tree and recommend an arborist to determine if the tree needs pruning to avoid a split.
