Thermal bridging / Ghosting?

Came across this in a townhome. This was in the ground floor level / basement. Home was built in 1990. There was evidence of soot staining upstairs 1 level from a wood burning fireplace. What do you guus think about these stains. Thanks for any help with this

"Ground Floor or “Below Grade”??
Is that stone for a fireplace??
Any indication of candles or plug-ins??
All specifics matter!!

Ground floor. One story below brick wood burning fireplace. No evidence. Of candles or plug ins on this floor. 3rd floor had evidence of plug-ins one with black staining above it

So then you know where the contaminants are coming from causing the ghosting.

Answered your own question…

Check for negative house pressure. You can’t light fires so if it’s not negative pressure, it’s a potential flue problem,
