TPR Valve Discharge

Hi, I’m new to this–still a student. Is it okay for the TPR discharge pipe to empty into the water heater tank pan if the pan is piped to the outside? Also, is this the correct piping material?
Thank you in advance for any input,
Daniel

Yes and yes, it appears so.

In most places of USA, it is acceptable. In few certain places that follow UPC, it may not be. You should fill out your profile to indicate location because construction methods vary with location. BTW, your pic shows amateurish installation of copper piping.

Keep up the good work Scott. When I did plumbing work full-time I always left one or two things for the plumbing inspector to find so that he felt like his job was justified. You’re going to have to leave at least one welcome for Larry so he feels good :slightly_smiling_face:

Just trying to add a little humor to keep it interesting, :grinning: Enjoy.

I understand it may be “acceptable” in a lot of areas. I wouldn’t want it to discharge to the pan in my home. The manufacturer usually recommends testing the tpr valve once a year, although im sure 98% of people don’t. But if you test it into the pan, your water heater will be sitting in water until it evaporates. Also if it allows a small amount of water to discharge, it will not be obvious and a problem may exist for a long time without knowing about it because it is draining to an inconspicuous location. Lastly if the valve opens fully under extreme pressue, the pan drain will not be enough to drain the high pressure boiling hot water away anyway and especially if it is raised up from the floor the water could splash and injure someone in the area.Just my thoughts, but i am sure it is common and “acceptable” most of the time.

And watching out for the cat!
