Hello, I am new to the InterNACHI discussion board. I did an inspection earlier and as I was inspecting the siding I noticed that there were small holes that looked like nails were driven through them and are not sealed. Is this a defect due to a potential for water to enter the home and cause damage?
Thanks for your help
I have to assume you are new to the construction inspection field.
Given your question and the situation at hand, you really should review the process of installing vinyl siding. With some basic understanding of this information, the answer to your question should be obvious. Sure, we can give you the answer, but you won’t learn what you need to know. So… here’s a video to get you started…

Yes to your question… as with any siding with cracks, holes, etc. Vinyl siding is an okay material but is difficult to mount things to properly. So, homeowners often just nail through it.
Not saying anything for sure… however, the last time I saw a similar pattern of holes like that the confirmed culprit was a woodpecker.
When I see it, it is usually caused by the cable installer moving some cables. Just report it and recommend sealing the holes.
