Water heater with no draft hood

Any reason why someone would install the gas water heater’s exhaust venting this way? No draft hood and with an opening further away. Wrong is wrong of course. Just wondering why.
Thanks
And I got that TPRV

Good job call it out.

Only reason is if there isn’t enough draft with default hood. I’d call it out for review unless there is paperwork showing why and by whom. Whenever someone messed with “engineered design”, it becomes very questionable.

Thank you!

Looks like they were fighting slope with the pipe (still didn’t get it) and using the hood would have made it even worse.

Great observation Matt. Probably putting in a larger and taller water heater than was installed originally.

Exactly!

Really on target with that! Thank you.

But now the water heater is subject to back draft when interior or exterior pressure changes. As other said, it needs evaluation by a very competent mechanical contractor.

Screw that… it needs correction, up to and including replacement with a proper unit for the situation!

Kinda wondering if that WH should of had a powervent kit installed, but the plumber took a shortcut for profits!?!?

For me, more questions than answers.

Is that now the diverter? It could help with backdraft, but it looks like exhaust will escape.

To quote the famous philosopher Forrest Gump “My mama says that stupid is as stupid does.”

Keep the faith.

Model number and manufacture please.
How many chimney flues?
Suspicious setup mind you.

A Direct Vent heater is used when ‘conventional’ chimney venting is not an option and an electrical source is not close by. The heater must be installed near an outside-facing wall as it draws combustion air from outdoors using the included 90” coaxial vent pipe.

I’m betting no one with any type of plumbing license has been anywhere near that water heater

I had a buddy with a similar crappy setup and his water heater wasn’t compatible with any of the modification kits - it was natural draft only. The local supply house we talked to said by far most water heaters are setup up one way or the other and that was it. This was a few years ago and I never researched it further so I’m not totally sure.
