What happened here - GFCIs?

Jerry the 2002 version of GFCIs still test the same circuitry as they always did. It is just tested before it will reset instead of testing to trip.

Yep, I know that. But that has nothing to do with what was asked or my reply.

The advantage to this is if it is bad and you test it it is now out of service. The old style could have the detection circuit totally dead but still "working".

Not really accurate. They could have made the old style test on the trip (my preference) and not reset if line load are reversed. Testing the GFCI on trip or reset is almost the same, except that I would know that it would "trip", now I only know that it failed. If it did not "trip" it also failed. No difference. If the reason is but forth that the GFCI device itself may fail 'after' tripping, the same argument says that it could 'fail to trip' after resetting ... so that argument does not go anywhere.

The simple matter is that NOT ALL OF THEM trip on reset, just one brand. The others have different ways of dealing with reversed line / load, which is where this started.

Did you ever see the IAEI report from central Florida electrical inspectors who were spot checking GFCIs on old work inspections?
The number that failed to trip on a test approached half, with the panel breaker type being worse than the receptacle.

Yep, in fact one of the main inspectors working on this was from Ft Lauderdale, down here in South Florida.

This is not the article I was looking for but it reaches many of the same conclusions. NACHI is even in on this one. Sorry about the resolution but it was huge at a tighter scan. (3mb)

This one is about 500k
