AI in the industry

I just wanted to know how the community feels about AI in the industry. It’s being sprinkled about everywhere. From software to marketing just wondering what everyone’s take is on it and how they are using it?

A big hell no!! AI has a tendency to hallucinate when it doesn’t know or fully understand what it’s been asked. It can also perpetuate false information.

My opinion about AI and the home inspection profession is that it wll be helpful with research and some of the reporting process. But it will also have the negative aspect of increasing the “dumbing down” of our profession. Right now, we are seeing some of this “dumbing down” with some of the software that we now have. With some software, a person can click a boilerplate comment that was written by who knows who and attach it to the report, even though the inspector really has no clue with what is going on. Just think about the folks who post a picture and ask for comments! They have not learned the basics, yet they are selling themselves as professional inspectors!

I’m a firm believer that you must learn the basics and then learn more and more as you develop in the profession as a qualified professional inspector. We should look at AI as just another tool to help us, but not to replace cognitive thinking or to replace learned knowledge that can take years for a person to acquire.

Yes, what about it?

Can’t speak for others but I don’t care for Asshole Inspectors in the industry!

I use Claude AI to help research various issues, but mainly use it to rephrase some of the technical reports to translate my hillbilly wording.

I did a brief experiment with al, it can’t even copy and paste without inserting it’s inaccurate (stupid) bias/comments.

People without much actual intelligence have to resort to the artificial kind.

Thankfully I’m nearing the end of my career as a HI.

Inspectors are getting dumbed down and the clients are getting petty.

I think AI can be a helpful tool in our industry. It’s interesting to see so many negative opinions of AI – I think back to other times in my life when new technology was introduced, in what felt like, over night!

It feels surreal to see this second wave of (an older generation) thumb their nose a new technology. I see why this younger generation (Gen Z) feels like they’re SO emersed in it. They are!

AI will soon be a standard tool used in Home Inspection - an industry standard. Let’s see who continues to progress in this field over the next few years…

Would you mind explaining how you feel Exactly how that tool will be used?

I expect you meant “immersed”? “Emersed” is a word used in botany to describe an aquatic plant whose stems and leaves rise above the water’s surface. Of course AI could have helped you write this without grammatical errors. Do you use AI regularly to help yourself?

I’m not a fortune teller, Im just seeing a pattern.

:joy: does it make you feel better about yourself to correct spelling and grammatical errors on message boards. It’s truly that very desire that is so deeply ingrained in some folks… good luck out there. Smh.

Insurance companies are still in the process of interpreting the language in their policies to defend against claims made by their policyholders for liability and financial loss caused by artificial intelligence. Until they work that out, my advice is to continue to rely upon actual intelligence. For now, artificial intelligence is to intelligence what artificial flowers are to botany.

I use Grok to read the sun-washed labels on heat pump condensers.

On a scale of 1 to 10 in ability with Photoshop, I’m probably a 9.8. Even with that, I have struggled to pull the detail out of some labels.

Upload to Grok? Has it in 2 seconds. I don’t know what Voodoo they use, but I’ve double checked and it’s got it. It’s magic.

The bonus is it’ll also tell you the Seer, HSPF, Afue, size age, and whatnot in a nice copy-able format.

The negative opinions come from the improper use of the tool. Such as is the case with IR cameras, moisture meters etc. Understanding the limitations of these tools and proper training to interpret their results is critical.

AI in the hands of a home inspector AI can either harm or help. It’s best everyone understands this and why.

I find it interesting when people emotionally defend AI…as if the relationship is more important than the contribution.
