Came accross this the other day I could use some qualified opinions on it.
I was inspecting a townhouse with the air handler to the heat pump in the drop ceiling of a first floor powder room. The drywall was missing at the ceiling but the air duct consisted of a grate opening in the wall about 10 feet away.
Anyone out there think this was poorly planned and installed? The second story did not have any cold air returns at all. What are your thoughts?

Erby,
Picture a 2 story townhouse with the a powder room on the first floor. Now instead of drywalling the ceiling they added a drop ceiling using the ceiling space, floor joists and walls as the cold air return. The cold air return is about 10 feet away from the bathroom.
I am pretty sure current codes call for a cold air duct and supply for each room in the house but as you know this one was built before then.
To top all of that off it really is left up to the AHJ to adopt the codes which in this case they obviously did not. Probably still have not adopted them.
The HVAC guys around here seen to think it is ok and continue to practice this when installing the HVAC ducts.
I am thinking of contacting some of the bigger manufactureres to ask their opinion of this practice.
