Because there is no such requirement.

The requirement simply states that the switch or receptacle cannot be placed within the enclosure.

There is however (I believe), such a rule for mobile homes.

That is probably where I heard it before I use to work for a mobile home plant as an inspector but I think back then it was 30". Something to think about though 2003 IRC 3903.10 sounds to me like there are descrbeing a shower or tub area and if this is the fact recepts and switches would be required to be 3’ from a tub or shower, because the wording that they use in 3902.10 and 3901.7 is that they are not to be installed in shower spaces. Another thing to think about is that in the 2005 NEC © Bathtub and Shower Space. Receptacles shall not be

installed within or directly over a bathtub or shower stall.Switches shall not be installed within wet locations

in tub or shower spaces unless installed as part of a

listed tub or shower assembly. Kinida sounds like they do have some kind of shower space set up but nothing to describe exactly what it is

I agree that most model codes just state a receptacle can’t be within a shower/tub enclosure for residences other than moble homes. I believe that 3’ clear recommendation comes from Canadian model codes, and US model codes for mobile homes.

I think the 3' clear is probably a good idea where possible, but does not appear to be a legal requirement based on model codes here in the US. Also note that that NACHI TOD indicates what the clearance "should" be ... not what it "must" be ... there is a difference ... ![icon_wink.gif](upload://ssT9V5t45yjlgXqiFRXL04eXtqw.gif)

Robert, you are correct. Those graphics are strait out of Canada thru Carston Dunlop. Something that got me into trouble when I used their book to study for the NHIE.

Now riddle me this batman … icon_lol.gif

Why is 3' clear from a receptacle to a shower/tub apparently required in Canada for all bathrooms, and for mobile homes in the US ... but not for bathrooms in a US home also? Is that an oversight in the NEC? Is there a greater risk with mobile homes?
