Bathroom/shower vent & stack vent

In putting on a new addtion to our house we are closing up the only window in our bathroom (which was in the shower). There is no vent/fan in the bathroom. My contractor wasn’t planning on adding one, but I feel we need a vent that vents all the way to the outside. I think we could either vent out the wall or the roof–would either work and should this be vented all the way to the outside?

The other thing is that the old plumbing vent stack will now vent into an attic space. There will be a vent in the attic directly above the old stack, but the stack ends about a foot from the new vent. I feel I should also insist that the stack vent all the way out the roof too.

I would be very pleased to hear from anyone with opinions on my venting issues.
Thanks,
Chris Wagner

Sounds to me like you should be the contractor.

Neither of the vents you mention should terminate in the attic they should both be vented to the outside. You would be making a very wise decision to add a bathroom exhaust vent to remove the moisture and methane. If you have done found those to items maybe you outta rethink this contractor it is cheaper to do it right the first time than to have to pay someone to redo it right.

Chris…

main vent stack should terminate no less than 6" above the roof, Might be more if you are in snow country. Not acceptable to a roof vent.

Bathroom exhaust fan could be to the exterior wall or through a roof vent. Either way acceptable. Attic is not.

I agree with the others that you seem more qualified by raising these questions than your contractor. Give him hell! ![icon_biggrin.gif](upload://iKNGSw3qcRIEmXySa8gItY6Gczg.gif)

Thanks for all the quick replies. I got the stack vented straight out the roof and the shower now has an exhaust that vents out a side wall! I was able to get the contractor to do both jobs today just before the drywall arrived onsight, so your timely responses were greatly appreciated! Our project is hopefully going to wrap up next week–boy will I be glad when we’re done.

Again everyone’s help and insight was great!
