Beam Cracks bad?

Is this problem?
The cracks are all the way through the beam.





Timber checking. Are they structural beams or cosmetic? Were you able to see all the way through them? Unless you can clearly see some sort of failure it’s normal for timber to do that.

I don’t see any “beams” in your picks David. I see wood planking. but I don’t think the checking you see is of any concern from GA…Jmho.

David, even though you may not have any Log Cabins in your area, it’s a great course on how wood siding and log wood construction works. Great insight even into general residential construction when it comes to wood materials.

While it is common checking, there are things to measure to determine whether the checking is excessive or not.

Are those beams or really big rafters? :wink:

Yeah, I figured that was the case. I was just stirring the pot in the beam vs rafter debate.
