We do a “Channakah Bush”. :mrgreen: But we still celebrate for 8 days. 8 sets of presents, but smaller.

What is called Easter is actually the capturing of the Pagan feast of Ishtar, the female consort to the Pagan god Ba’al. To pagans, the feast was a fertility festival. It was celebrated by the giving of baby chicks and rabbits, signifying new life and fertility (rabbits, get it ;-)).

Women who had tried to get pregnant, but could not, would enter the festival wearing a floppy hat, with a ribbon tying the hat down. They could then enter the ritualistic orgies and, hopefully, get pregnant. Thus the origin of the “Easter Bonnet”.

When the Roman Empire went Christian (officially, under Constintine) the festival was changed to refect the ressurection of Y’shua. Actually, the first day after the first Shabbat (Saturday) during the 8 days ofd Pasach (Passover) is known as the Feast of First Fruits, when the fistborn children were brought to the Temple for dedication. Y’shua was resurrected on First Fruits. He was the “first fruit” of the new age, the first to defeat death.

Simialrly, “Chirstmas” was a pagan feast of the Winter Solceste, when the days starting getting longer. There was a big party. Actually, Y’shua was born during the Jewish feast of Sukkot (late Sept, early Oct, The Jewish calendar is based upon the moon cycles). But, when Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire, they co-opted it. Good government NEVER cancels a traditional party, don’t you know.

We just do Passover.

Actually, I knew all that stuff…but it really doesn’t apply to today’s festivities.

Except for a few muffled yelps from the unwashed hinterlands of Arizona when the Sun appears to “stand still”, nobody celebrates the solstice–or the Feast of Ishtar, or Ba’al–or cares.

Actually, I do enjoy learning of Jewish tradition, i.e. Y’shua was born during the Jewish feast of Sukkot (late Sept, early Oct, The Jewish calendar is based upon the moon cycles).

We used to host a seder for several years, but for some reason unknown it has not been served in our home of late. I’ll speak with the Missus about that and see what we can do come spring.

Actually, it wasn’t Christmas until after there were Christians. Before that time it was a feast of fear. On the solstice the Sun appeared to “stand still” and this was a concern to the unknowing of the day. The prevailing notion was that by feasting, the gods would be appeased and they would start the Sun on its travels across the sky once again.

The term is from the Latin sol and *sistere, *meaning Sun and to stand…

It also derives from Middle English (I know, I was there:))

One’s politics are based upon one’s worldview, how a person sees the world and his (or her) relationship to it. This shapes one’s ideology (the Principles that define one’s behavior).

Bush is NOT a Conservative, he was center-right. But that was WAY better than Gore (who, it has been revealed, by his own actions) was just plain wacky!

I really am getting tired of people who don’t have a worldview, and have no defined idealology, and, apparently, have never thought this through, complaining about those who have.

Bob, you have previously, on this thread, stated “I also change my opinions as I am not one for rigid thinking.”. So, you do not have any basis, any thought out philosophy, any principles or grounding.

It’s not just about “politics”, it’s about beimng a serious adult, thinking things through, researching and learning and fining out what is important to you and about how you will live your life, what you will stand for.

“Centrists” are, usually, just people who don’t pay enough attention to what is coing on around them and cannot be bothered to get out of their self-absorbed shells.

It is about values. Mr. Stein (who is much more than a simple movie actor, trained economist, policy maker during the Reagan Administration, and a real bright guy) has made a statement, based upon his values and principles and you seem to agree with it.

Then, why are you not a Conservative, in your ideology?

My lean is closer to Conservative ideals on finance and Liberal or Libertarian on Social issues.

Only small minds repeat Mantra, which is the same thing as empty headed as that is what pure meditation actually is.

Anything repeated often enough over and over is a form of brain washing , while a true intellectual bears an open mind and holds no grudges.

Correction. The only reason to take a stand on something you do not hold (aka lie) is to stir up trouble (aka being a jerk).

Because you stated that you take stands that you do not hold, I simply asked you a question? Does that make you a liar, jerk or both? The question is for you to answer or not. It’s also for you to be insulted or not. But being insulted in this case is on lines with being angry at the umpire when he calls you out for missing the ball three times in a row. That’s funny because in my younger days I was as liberal as a Massachusetts Kennedy. As I grew up and “opened” my mind I saw the reality of the fact that what a liberal claimed to be protecting or supporting was actually the exact opposite. Besides, no one has ever said Reagan or Bush were God… No one is perfect. But they were both a heck of a lot better than the zero we’ve got in office now.

Pretty much describes the Liberal playbook don’t ya think? Yo might also want to consider the fact that a completely open mind is a two way street. It appears that many who claim to be open minded are so open minded that their brains have leaked out.

BTW, I became a conservative, because I decided to practice what I was preaching and “open my mind” to the points of the other side. Once I did I was able to see the hypocrisy and lies of the left. I’m not open minded to lies, or liars…
