I hope everyone has had a great week so far. I was taking a look at a home constructed in 2004 today. It had PEX with brass fittings stamped with “F877 QPEX”. There was a mild amount of corrosion at the joints. Are these the Zurn fittings I’ve read about?
If these are the same, how concerned should I be? There were two water leaks that I found from the joints.
Related question, I found PEX piping stamped 1006, but it was manufactured by Vangaurd (who ended up getting bought out by Nibco). I’m thinking this is okay, but I wanted to get y’all’s opinions.
That’s a problem you need to document, and if 2 visible fittings have corrosion or leakage, there may well be inaccessible fittings (couplings, elbows, crimp rings, etc.) that have issues.
Valid question, but for your reporting, it doesn’t matter. Those brass connectors are failing. I often call it “corrosion” (everyone understands “corrosion”), but “dezincification” is a more accurate term. I see it more often on brass valves that are usually on copper pipes. The water pH and quality can affect this, too. Some areas of the country have this worse than others.
Dezincification. Zinc leaching: The zinc in the brass can seep into the water, causing a white residue to build up, as in your image, in the pipes and constrict water flow.
Do not worry if you can not find the manufacturer, the symptoms or dezincification staining are plainly visible.
Suspect: Signs of dezincification, white residue to build up on T-fittings and elbows.
