Sorry about the confusion. I wasn’t even looking at that area. I was looking on the stud surface in the background. It appears to be termite trails to me.
Compare these trails with the trails in the background on that stud that the spotlight is pointing at.
Maybe I'm seeing things....

A home cannot be transferred in CA without a termite report. Termite inspectors are licensed by the State and are allowed to perform remediation as State licensed contractors.

Todd, that is an eye opening link, to say the least! I’ve seen lots of mud dauber nests in attics, and have yet to get stung,(shouldnt’ of said that, probably happen next week) but I’ve never seen yellow jacket nests in attics. Has anyone gotten swarmed in an attic? what’d you do, besides getting the heck out of there?

Stu,
I have yet to be stung during an inspection, which is good cuz we have those damn killer bees here in AZ.
I grew up in Oregon and I can say for certain that the yellow jackets are super mean!! I was out in the woods picking black berries with my brother and Grandfather and my brother stepped on a YJ nest (in Oregon they live underground) and I was 30-40 feet away. I received 5 stings Grandpa got 7 and my brother got over 30!!! If he was allergic he would have died. If you see an active nest get out and recommend a bug dude!!!

Just last week I was inspecting a home that had an air exchanger. I was telling the homeowner to make sure every once an a while he wipes off the intake vent due to debris accumulating on the screen. While I was telling him that I stuck my hand under the vent to wipe it for him and hit a Hornet’s nest. Holy Hanna!!! Lucky it was last years nest & none were around yet!!
