Circuit protection on electric roll shutters

What type of protection is required for electric roll shutters? AFCI, GFCI or combination?

Thank you,

The requirement is location, voltage, and amperage specific. So… AFCI very likely, GFCI not very likely. Keep in mind, these could be relatively recent NEC requirements in your area. Be very careful how you word it because the requirement may have local amendments. Best thing is to ask a local electrical inspector and or the building department.

Is not GFCI required on all outdoor outlets/circuits in Florida?

Florida is on NEC 2017 without state amendments… most outdoor “receptacles”, yes. However, if the unit is directly wired via an an outdoor “outlet”, then no. Think HVAC outdoor equipment, when was GFCI required? However, NEC 2020 has expanded GFCI protection to included not just outdoor receptacles but outlets, too. There is an ongoing hiccup with that requirement due to some issues with some minisplits, once that is ironed out and the state adopts NEC 2020 or newer, and without amendments, you would be correct.

Just asking.
Fla is a different animal for me. I have been pumping gas there with an open junction box with everything hanging out, 3’ from the pump. And stand back from those bait shops was you stand around in water in your flip flops!

Never inspected anything with a power awning. Equipment circuits that are dedicated are not protected here, but don’t know where an awning falls into that.

I think I would report this under “Requires further observation:” as the client would likely be raising or lowering the appliance at some point due to a rain event, that is if it was not protected.
