Coliform testing

For those of you that take water samples for coliform testing:

If the results come back that total coliform is found but E. Coli was not, is it a big deal? Is it still considered a health issue?

The local lab here does not quantify the results. The results are either "Found" or "Not Found".

They offered little information when I called with this question.

Here the Ontario Ministry of Health which does free testing for coliform and e.coli says that as a guidline in total coliform per 100/ml

<=4 No significant evidence of bacterial contamination
=>5 Significant evidence of bacterial contamination and may be unsafe to drink

These are guildlines only.

Thanks guys.

Good link Gerry. So if I'm reading it correctly, if there is any level of total coliform, there is a potential for a problem with the tank.
