I see this quite often - a modified hanger to hang a beam coming off the ledger where one 2x is abutted the ledger. If you were to retrofit this with a correct metal connector. Anyone know what would be approved?
Poor deck planning. Some one did not account for the built up rim band. That outer band is not helping hold up the inner band and vice versa. All the bearing is loaded on the right side of that hanger.
Exactly! And I see this all the time, lots of times i’ll see a single rim band/joist nailed into the end of the ledger, not doubled up. Just curious how someone would correct both scenarios to satisfy my curiosity.
Yup, I know this… but you need to remember that there are members here that may not be as smart as you, and have no idea what they’re looking at. They are here to learn, and unless an a-hole like myself comes along and points it out, they may miss what is obvious to us, and place others at harm!
You’re right there. This deck had many other issues as well. The joists were pulling from their hangers (no lateral load support), the ledger was beginning to pull from the structure and the joists were dropping as well. Others as well.
Nope… I’m a firm believer that “If you can’t laugh at yourself, you have no right laughing at others”!
Believe me… I’m laughing my ass off at others all-the-time!!
