Does anyone have a good resource to help estimate the cost of repairs and upgrades.

Why get involved in that? I used to give a “cost guide” from the FHA as a courtesy to my clients and it became a nightmare. They would quote these national averages instead of having a licensed technician tell them what the realistic cost would be. It became the unintentional cause of deal killers.

Give them a list of contractors in the area to call for that information.

Dennis, I knew I would get that response, but I get referrals from attorneys and they want repair costs, replacement costs and upgrade costs for their clients. I am also using a guide that does not reflect true costs and that is why I am looking for something better.

John, I used to use this book a long time ago and it worked quite well for different areas:

My report gives a range of prices for some things but it also states:

"Individual prices from contractors can vary substantially from these ranges. I advise that several bids be obtained on any work exceeding several hundred dollars. DO NOT RELY ON THESE PRICES...GET FURTHER ESTIMATES."

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks, I will look into both of them. The Marshall Swift has a 2005 version.

The one I use is the CD estimater from Craftsman estimating software.
