Dangerous panel?

Is this a Zinsco panel and or otherwise potentially dangerous?

Prevailing opinion is 'everybody has one '.Did you open it up or not ?
Hard to say it is safe with the cover on.

It’s a Zinsco, yes. Potentially dangerous? No more so than any other panel…

It seems new inspectors can become more dangerous than an electrical panel by listening to people on the internet…

Where do think many of the “teachers” get their information?

Many insurance companies, many mortgage lenders, San Diego electricians whom I know, and San Diego home inspectors whom I know from ASHI and CREIA consider them dangerous, outdated, latent fire hazards, etc.

I would be remiss in my duty of care if I ignored the prevailing opinion here about Zinsco panels, and that omission would be even more problematic if something happened and the Client’s attorneys and others involved discovered all the information about Zinsco panels that is available on many Internet sites and from all the people I mentioned earlier.

These breakers have a history of failing, and many recommend them be replaced. Id just mention it in the report.

No one asked you to ignore them.

If your going to talk about them, then I recommend you **“test” **them.

Do inspectors carry around load banks to test the loads on breakers and trip levels?

Nope, they (some, anyway) just perpetuate the misinformation that has littered the Internet.

Jeff, can you pm me?

Apparently not - there is no PM button in your profile.

I like Frank Rotte’s comment in a similar thread:

The service panel brand was Zinsco. Zinsco panels are reputed to have a high rate of circuit breaker failure which can result in a fire or shock/electrocution. The Inspector recommends that before the expiration of your Inspection Contingency Period, you consult with a qualified electrical contractor concerning the necessity for replacing this service panel. Information about defective Zinsco panels is widely available on the internet.
