DEFECT: "Concrete Cancer" Pools in Texas

Here’s a scattered but ultimately fairly substantive article on defective concrete used in pools in the Austin Texas area:

Also, if you plan on hiring a pool builder, make sure the concrete contractor can prove they’re using the right concrete mix.

And herein is the root of the problem. The pool builder is responsible for the materials used on site. Latent defects in some materials may slip through. However this should not have if the pool builder knows what they are doing. All the pool builder has to do is require batch/mix tickets be provided by the driver which is a description of the concrete and what is used in it. If the plant does not provide a proper and descriptive ticket then another plant should be used. If the pool builder wants to make sure his/her work is done right they should perform the job right.

I didn’t see anywhere in the article that the pool builder had any evidence that the provided concrete was bad since they did not perform that function as they should. All I see is finger pointing in the article.

Another aspect of the phrase above is that it makes it seem that the homeowner who most likely knows nothing about concrete should be the one to perform the pool builders job.

I have all but quit inspecting pools. To be honest, I find it difficult to tell the difference between just calcium & the beginning stages of ASR. You don’t want to be the inspector that misses a 100k problem nor being wrong & terrifying a client about a 100k problem they don’t have. Since ASR is all a buzz around here nowadays, I find that I can recommend the client seek out an independent pool inspection with someone that might specialize in ASR identification. Now my client really feels I care about them more than just making money & I sleep better not having to worry if I will get wrapped up in some ASR lawsuit.
Sure, I can always just say “Might be ASR. Pay someone else to come take a look after you already paid me to take a look”, but that just isn’t my style nor do I think it is beneficial to the client.
Here is another article Community Impact. Similar but I strongly dislike KVUE for their distortion of witness/interview statements to always sensationalize or fit the agenda they are pushing.
