Sorry Rafael, but I don't think an answer is possible. Could be anything. What did it smell like? I'm assuming you didn't taste it? Did they park their leaky mower there? Did they spill something? Is it the return of the Blob?

I think you are best reporting it simply as "Unknown Black Slimy Stuff" and moving on.

If it’s in a shady spot with not much drainage or even a low area, my guess would be a relative of the mold/algae family. I’ve seen and heard it called everything from lawn mold to mildew. It’s quite common in areas that are moist all the time and don’t get much sunlight.


Going from a picture is impossible as we can't use all the five senses to come to a conclusion. Maybe one of our mould specialists can give us their opinion?

The only reason I didn't think it was oil is because I don't believe that oil would support the growth of grass or the other green mold/algae that's growing on it.
