It’s both. I mostly post inspection information. I’ve gotten “animated” a few times, but mostly hold it in check. Members become friendly (and sometimes, not so friendly) here and post whatever is on their minds. A lot of it is pretty entertaining. It is still the best place and often the quickest for information on home inspection topics. So I pan out the silt for the gold nuggets. And there is quite a bit of gold.
What constitutes “professional” sounds easy to describe, but in real life, “unprofessional” behavior by professionals is as common as the sun rising.
I’ve been a message board junkie since the internet started and it’s a funny thing. Some are moderated, some are VERY heavily moderated and some are just left alone. I find the ones that are left alone have the least amount of BS and people fighting… and I’d put this board firmly in that camp. Sure, there are flare-ups and posters that “stir the pot” but for the most part there are great people with great information hanging out here.
I remember this Fidonet echo with two guys going at it. This pre-dates the internet, modems only, like 1985 or 86.
The funniest part about it, replies on FidoNet often took 24-36 hours to reach you, then another 24-36 to get back to the original poster.
It was a slow motion argument and these guys were fighting over Ford/Chevy and the inherent advantage Fords have with a front distributor. It turned into an insult fest, that eventually turned into a running gag.
“Tune in tomorrow to see what Larry has to say about Bill’s small genitals”. It got very creative. I bet those guys, if still alive, are friends today because eventually they both just agreed that the thread was just fun and they’d sorta forgotten why they were arguing.
I prefer very little forum policing. Spammers can go to a wood chipper though. I was a CompuServe Sysop for a while, I ran several message boards and I still have my own message board too but it’s just for gaming.
Yeah, that’s a debate that has undoubtedly gained forum owners millions of clicks I’ve had various RVs over the years and frequent quite a few boards and it’s always great when some new, unsuspecting RV buyers wanders in asks, “Which truck would be best to tow my 5th wheel?”
