Hello everyone,

I just wanted to get some feedback on what everyone feels are the absolute essential tools for an inspection (ladder, flashlight, etc.) and also the tools that maybe simply be useful. I am fairly new to the industry and would like to know what all of you think.

Thanks all for your time and effort. It is very much appreciated.

I use the following the most:

Ladder
flashlight
digital camera
tablet pc
probe (I use an awl)
GFCI/circuit tester
pigtail continuity tester
three prong to two prong adapter
infrared thermometer gun
extendable inspection mirror
fireplace lighter
1 1/2" block (for garage door testing)
tyvek coveralls
knee pads
hat for keeping dust/cobwebs off my head
latex gloves (for crawlspaces)
binoculars
dust mask (for crawlspaces and attics)
Code check books (the whole series)

Any other tools I use like moisture meter, ampmeter, etc. I only use when clients aren't around and if I need them to better understand what my eyes tell me.

Dennis,

Thanks very much for the response . It is really appreciated. Do you find that a carbon monoxide detecting device is necessary at all and how many different types of ladders do you use? Also, do you provide a report on-site immediately after the inspection? If so, how is the report done, written/printed, etc.?

Thanks,

Dana

Do you find that a carbon monoxide detecting device is necessary at all? - No. I sometimes use a plug in detector close to a register in the living space.

how many different types of ladders do you use? - A 13.5 ft fold-up

do you provide a report on-site immediately after the inspection? I go back to my office and either email it a few hours later or deliver it the next morning if the client is local. You never know what pops back into mind after you leave the site. I do not feel I am giving a good service if I produce the report on site. I never had a problem with this.

bottle of aspirin or ibuprofen for dealing with the occasionally cranky partners, clients and/or realtors. An absolute must.
