Came across this today where blower fan was between evap coil and heat exchanger.
Downdraft furnace and I could not find a furnace filter.
I’ve never seen this before and it just doesn’t seem right.
What do you think?

In a downdraft furnace configuration the evaporator coil should be located below the furnace.
This prevents condensation from occurring on the heat exchanger’s from cold air passing through the exchanger and the indoor air which is passing through the burner tubes condensing moisture and damaging the heat exchanger.
As for finding a filter, it should be somewhere else in the house.
I don’t know why I am a specter would be evaluating the system design.
On the other side of the coin, drawing air through the evaporator coil rather than blowing the air through it is more efficient and effective in reducing humidity in the air. So, if you want to open up a can of worms, recommend further evaluation by a mechanical contractor. If you want to discuss system design, recommend further evaluation by an HVAC thermodynamic engineer.
