Expansion tank between two water heaters?

This seems wrong.

I found cold going into the heater on the right, and hot going out into the expansion tank, then into the heater on the left, then hot still going out of the heater on the left, I think?

Help a brother out.

no problem. The pressure before and after the tank is the same. The expansion tank will work before, between or after the tanks.

From what you’ve described, those two water heaters are piped in series. The expansion tank should never be installed on a hot side of a water heater. They’re not designed to be on the hot water side. The expansion tank should have been installed on the inlet cold side of the first water heater.

See the manual below where it states the water heater should be installed on cold water supply.

It is a problem. The purpose of the expansion tank is to allow the cold water someplace to expand. Pressure doesn’t mean a thing, we’re talking about thermal expansion. The expansion tank is not designed to constantly be in hot water. Thats why the manual always states the expansion tank should be 18 inches away from the cold side inlet. The water going into the expansion tank is cold.

Homeowner’s dilemma: expansion tank placement guide - hot or cold side of water heater? - ToiletSense

You don’t really use that Google search AI crap for your reports do you? That’s how rookies write their report or do their research.

You may want to reference the installation manual.

Can you produce an expansion tank designed for water heaters that states anything other than installing it on the cold water supply side?

Can you provide me with the IRC code that states the expansion tank can be installed on the hot water side? I’ll even accept the UPC.

From three different expansion tank manufacturers. I have yet to find a manufacturer that allows their expansion tank to be installed on the hot water side.

I ended up putting “Not installed to manufacturer specs” in the report, focusing my comments on a potentially voided warranty.

Thanks for providing those examples!

Ethan, you might want to check this out from a water heater manufacturer, A. O. Smith:
