If a door leading to a attached garage is painted how do you tell if it’s fire rated! icon_sad.gif

You need to verify if the door is solid (1 3/8") or hollow core.

Solid good....hollow core bad.

David:

If a door is truly fire-rated it will have a label or marking indicating the rating and who gave the rating.

Sometimes the rating label that should be on the hinge side of the door edge gets painted over for older homes, in which case ya just check if the door is solid wood or hollow metal. The old hollow core wood garage doors are NG now as Andrew noted … which a few taps with the back of your screwdriver (ya have one of those, right … lol) should help ID … icon_wink.gif

For new construction, a label that isn't visible will not fly.

I am absolutely amazed sometimes by how much thought goes into doing things wrong

Dont forget to make sure it has self closing hinge on it as well. I find alot of them now with pet doors cut into them. This does not help.

Yes, the door needs to be fire-rated with a self closing mechanism. Has been since the 1920’s. Metal or solid core wood. Of course local building officials have the final say. Check with them. Quoting code is a no no anyway unless it is the local one. Even then, we are not code officials and the liability…?
