Fire entry for attached garages

My question is for attic hatch doors and attics.

I know that the wall & entry door need to be fire rated.

What if a garage has a attic pulldown hatch that is wood and the house attic & garage have no seperation wall.

Thank you

Dave

The pull down is required to be rated as well, otherwise, the “firewall” system has been compromised.

i just installed a pull down stairway in my dads attic and the manufacturers papers states that it has a fire rating = to 5/8 sheetrock. can’t quite remember what that # is though. icon_cool.gif

I would question how plywood could achieve the same fire rating as 5/8 drywall. A drywall assembly gets its rating from a complete assembly which would consist of fire taping and in some cases fire caulking as well.

A wood pull down is not sealed around the perimeter so how can it achieve the same rating?

i think it’s a play on term so to speak. the manufacturer made the pull down, which they may have treaded, but they didn’t make the gap around it. it just showd up? icon_cool.gif

There are pull downs that are specifically designed for use in ceilings that are required by code to be “fire-resistance-rated.”

I had one that the owner had sheetrocked the bottom of the ladder and put strips of sheetrock over the perimiter. I checked with the state Fire Marshall and in his opinion, thought it would be OK.

The only thing wrong was when I opened it, the the sheetrock strip on the hinged end broke and fell off.

Not necessarily. Even some of the metal pull downs are not listed for use in fire-rated ceilings.
