Florida Fire Alarm Requirements for Older Homes

Does Florida require fire alarms or smoke detectors to be installed for homes built prior to 2000?

## Is there a Florida law that all older homes must have smoke alarms, regardless of when they were built?

Does it matter? Always recommend that each bedroom has a smoke alarm, and that CO alarms are placed as needed

Are homes built before 2000 safer so they don’t require them ???

The Life Safety Code (NFPA 101) was passed by the NFPA in 1976, and was the first document that stated “smoke alarms are required” to be in every home.

As a home inspetor in Ohio, unless the home was built after 2016 when the requirement here changed, I always recommmend ionization and photoelectric smoke detectors and CO detectors when appropriate, be installed in appropriate locations. I consider this a safety issue.

I also explain to my clients the difference between ionization and photoelectric and why both types should be installed, because unless they are a firefighter they most likely don’t know the difference.
