Is there a reason that there is no insulation on the freon line inside the unit. Seem to me, that if it is insulated from the coil to the exterior of the compressor, why not continue the last 12" or so.

No reason what so ever. Generally the manufacturers leave up to the installer. The install seldom insulates inside a unit. they concentrate on the exposed suction line. The unit should be designed to handle some condensate. On high humidity days the compressor itself will sweat. Do not under any circumstance insulate the compressor. It would greatly shorten its life.
