Gas stove vent clearances

A house I inspected today had a freestanding gas stove with a vent that terminated on an exterior wall below the front porch ceiling. The ceiling was 32" above the vent. Black soot or scorch marks were visible on the (LP) siding above.

Is there a minimum distance a porch roof should be above such a vent? Seems like a fire hazard to
me.

Hi Jim,

That does look pretty nasty!! Here's what IRC says in the mechanical section G2426.6.7 Exterior wall penetrations.

A gas vent extending through an exterior wall shall not terminate adjacent to the wall or below eaves or papapets, except as provided in Sections G2426.2.4 and G2426.3.4

Some of these exceptions in G2426.2.4 refer to manufacturer's specs. so if you can get your hands on those and find out what type of vent was used, it should give you the definitive answer.

Good Luck...
Sue

Jim,

All direct vents must be 12" minimum from the ground, and 9" from any ceiling overhangs. They must also maintain a 12? clearance from projections exceeding 2 ? from wall.

What is needed here is a stainless steel deflector plate installed at the top of this vent. This plate is manufactured to deflect heat away from the siding and will keep this area free from defects.
