so the slope can be anywhere from 1 inch drop in 8 feet to 1 inch in 20 feet ?
Seems a large margin for error.
The only reason I ask this question is, I had a similar question on my test...twice, and I never went over any gutter questions.
Besides, given your answer, there is no wrong answer, because the dimensions fall under all of the options,....so I guess, as "they" say, 8 feet would be the BEST answer.
And the answer to "What is a gutter" ?
My new home if I don't pass the stinking test

Folks,
I too have heard and read conflicting advice as to the slope of gutters. Therefore, I adhere to what I was taught in my HI school, as well as what I see in print frequently, 1/4" inch per foot. Liquid does not need any more slope than that to effectively drain.

Ditto for me from what Larry said, 1/8" per is what my gutter guys tell me they start at maybe a little more but nothing less, and both subs said the same thing.

1/8" per foot = 1" per 8’ , which is preffered, and remember, if the run is longer than 40’ a downspout should be at each end of the gutter with the slope starting from the middle. Wow, all that on a Monday Morning.
