I’m 73 a few days ago and solicited for a builder to put an addition n my house for over a year and a half. All, I had to pick from were young ones that just wanted to general contract the job and they had little or no experience. They wouldn’t do the actual work, mind you ie, laying the block, crawl space flat work, framing, roofing, siding, insulation, etc. And they’ll have the best subs but they don’t know who they are just yet when I asked “who?". They just wanted to push paper.

All the craftsmen are or have retired it seems. It’s scary when I heard answers to questions I had for them like: “How will you make sure the footing is set at the correct height so the floor to the addition lines up with existing?”…a blank stare or something like: “Oh, that will be acknowledged by the framing sub when he decides if he has to rip the floor joist down when he shows up after the masonry sub has left.” LOL!! Or,”How will you determine the energy heel height on the new trusses to match the existing?” Someone actually said: “Oh. the heels are all the same height. Not to worry, we can always have the framer shave the top cord down.”

It’s a relatively small addition to our master (not primary) bedroom of 12’ x 14’. So I decided a slightly younger remodeler builder buddy and I will do it our selves come spring or sooner if we have a warm winter and can move the gas line to get started.

It’ll be fun he said.

It’s sad the state of the ‘workforce’ right now. Good luck with your project.
