HVAC Utility Closet

I had one today with the HVAC located in an interior utility closet. The closet did not have a ceiling. It was open into the attic. Effectively this made the closet unconditioned space. The door had a good weather seal. The walls should have been insulated but they were not. Other than that I can not see anything else that is a problem. Am I missing something?

I’d say that was a fire hazzard. A fire would go right to the attic.

Pretty sure it needs to be enclosed.

If the door was sealed, where did the unit get it's air from?

Did you get a pic of it?

It actually had ducts provided for combustion air. The picture does not do it justice. There is more opening than the picture indicates.

Looks like the upper enclosure combustion air vent on the right, exhaust vent in the middle and lower enclosure combustion air vent on the left. It does not have to be sealed, but it needs screen mesh over the open attic space and combustion air vents to prevent vermin access to the interior structure. icon_idea.gif
