If the closet is dedicated for this installation and properly insulated
there is nothing wrong with it. Almost all slab-built houses in this
area have the furnace in the closet.
See IRC M1402.2 for clearances.

It’s okay as Jae said. It just can’t be in a closet that opens into a bedroom.

This is the problem. The closet has 2 entrances. One from the living room and the other from the bedroom.

Is that a cold air return at the lower left, unconnected to the furnace, or the lower the lower half of the combustion air supply?

The lower half on the left is the return and it is connected. It just doesn’t look like it from the picture. Combustion air is supplied through a vent on the lower right hand corner of the wall. Covered by the couch.

I’m still trying to make sense of that cold air return - it looks like the side facing the furnace is open. Is any portion of the return air being drawn from the “closet”?
Also, is there only one inlet for for combustion air, or is there a second inlet near the top of the closet?

I wish I had another picture but trust me the return is not open. There is not another register.

Mike,
The duct to the left is the return plenum. The duct feeds from the bottom of the plenum and enters the furnace.
