Children should be cared for. And they should be provided with all the quality food that they want to eat paid for by us taxpayers.
I’m opposed to Jimmy Carter’s invention … the Department of Education. Local communities should still be governing and maintaining their school districts, classrooms — including food services. Less government means less indoctrination and more education.
I agree.
I’d much rather that, than most of the other multitudes of BS programs they squander our tax money on!!
That’s all well and good on the face of it. The problem arises when the government manages anything it becomes mismanaged. Just like the Obama administrations attempt to control the content of what the kids eat; it will be wasteful and costly with little true benefit to children.
The truth is it does not “take a village” to raise a child. It merely takes a whole family unit. That means the government needs to stop incentivizing unwed mothers to have still more children with no fathers.
That’s true. Michael oBOMBa served slop to American children when he took over school lunches during his husband’s presidency.
Minnesota got it done last year. Although I’m not confident on the “quality food” part of it, lol. But it is edible at the very least I’m sure.
I agree, but why stop at food? What about healthcare? What about a safe and warm place to sleep?
IMO the key is to prevent abuse of programs meant to help others.
I’m down. Paying taxes to care for children who can’t fend for themselves is socialism I don’t oppose.
The way to do that is to prevent the government from being involved in the first place.
Philanthropy starts at your house NOT the White House!
Great idea.
We would have to correct some fundamental issues within our government before funding this. Basically, get all their hands out of the cookie jar. It can be done, but it won’t be done as long as we accept it.
These things need to be handled on a local level.
I agree. We got it done in our state. Other states can do it too if they wish. Not everything has to be a federal program.
Our government has such a poor record with understanding nutrition it’s truly sad. Their idea of a balanced diet is 95% sugar and carbs (more sugar). The food pyramid has literally been upside-down since day 1.
Well… we have a law that was passed, but the results of how effective it is working is still PENDING!
You must remember, this is Minnesota, aka. ‘Little California’, land of greedy politicians and excessive taxes, and free rides for {cough-cough} “immigrants”!!
How about we stop child trafficking too?
We already pay taxes for this and it is called “Welfare” which goes beyond just the food issue. The problem is the “Welfare Program” is so badly mismanaged and abused that the truly needy many times are left out.
Exactly what I was thinking when I read Kevins comment…
How about we stop child trafficking too?

I don’t think understanding is the issue. When you get all the various ag producers together, the best lobbyist got the base of the food pyramid. I.e. corn and wheat growers. Load up them Carbs Ethel, we won’t the pyramid lottery!
Good point… And all the restaurants are happy to jump on board too. Rice, flour and potatoes are cheap!!
I happened upon this book during Covid and it pretty much changed my life as far as diet:

There’s a chapter about how George McGovern was largely responsible for starting the government down the wrong road with nutrition back in the 80s. It was clear the info he was getting was incorrect but he was in a hurry to run for president (again) and just rubberstamped it.
Sugar, carbs and seed oils are the root of evil in our diets and Americans just love to shove that stuff in their pie holes.
I largely stopped eating carbs and lost 25# without doing anything else. I eat meat, dairy and veggies and only cook with animal fat, olive oil or avocado oil - no margarine, canola, etc. Very little sugar. Last check up my cholesterol was <140 and my doc says I’m so far down/away the scale from diabetes it’s almost funny.
The author profiles several civilizations of people that ate nothing but animal fat based diets and never had a case of cancer until they got introduced to a western diet loaded up with grains and other crap.
Some of the stuff in the book seems almost impossible to believe and it may not work for everyone but it’s worked great for me.
