How to define when an extension cord is used as permanent wiring? Here’s my thoughts. It’s not an authorative definition, but it’s how I make the distinction.
Permanent wiring:
If the cord is used to power a permanently placed appliance such as a HVAC condensate pump, garage door opener, well pumps, crawl space lights, any type of permanent lighting fixture, etc., that meets the definition of permanent wiring. If the cord is run through walls, ceilings, or is used continuously in attics or crawl spaces, that’s “permanent” and not proper.
Temporary wiring:
If the cord is used to power something mobile (even if in reality it never moves) such as TVs or computers, tools, small appliances, even refrigerators or freezers in garages, that’s acceptable to me.
