Send that to your buddy Paul.
HEY Dorks does this mean you only inspect houses less than 10 yrs old!
Have a nice rest see you in the morning!
No. But I give my clients the latest information regardless of when the home was built.
Thanks Paul, AFCI’s save lives. I for one am glad that they are available, and I have kids that have recently bought houses and I am glad that they are now required by code in all bedrooms, I think they should be required throughout home.
Thanks Paul. good post
Yes Paul I hope the government realizes what they are doing and gives rebates for breakers to be changed in older homes. As it is the only ones getting fat are the ones at the top.
I can promise you one thing. Many of the comments made by Mr. Holt ( and I respect him greatly ) are incorrect when it comes to AFCI devices and how they function. I know because I speak to manufacturers on a daily basis and they agree. With that said, basic principals are always good regardless of the context to which they are presented.
But Paul, Kevin found it on the internet. It must be true.
It still gets the point across Paul!
I am glad they are working on the problems associated with design.
How far back do we need to go to change the originals?
And they should…and they will. It all depends if each state (like Virginia) choosed to RAPE down the use of the product to a point they can not serve the purpose they are intended. Here is an example of when states get involved by people who do not know what a products intent is.
(P.S. for all those saying manufacturers are getting fat on this ONE product…try saying that with a straight face the next time to go to the movies and buy a bucket of popcorn, by a fountain drink at your loca pizza shop…the big difference, lives can be saved with this product)
Ok…back to the intent…Lets pick on MY OWN state…Virginia
The Virginia Construction Code (law of the land in Viginia) modified the IRC portion of E3902.11 to simply apply to bedroom outlets (outlets- not just receptacle outlets mind you).
So in a one and two family dwelling and townhouse AFCI’s are only required as they were in the 2005 NEC basically for bedrooms only. However, this was a result of the Home Builders Association here in VA lobbying this modification because they felt it hurt the builders…
However, in Virginia the multi-family dwellings with dwelling units being constructed under the IBC the NEC takes dominance due to being referenced by the International Building Code and VCC. So guess what, a dwelling unit with all the same descriptions of a dwelling are required to meet the full intent of Section 210.12(A) and install AFCI’s everywhere listed by the code…so why are multifamily dwellings wiring more important that one and two family dwellings…they are not…but the power of lobbiests are…
Virginia has a lopsided law that gives greater protection to occupants of a structure type that in most cases will already be sprinkled as well rather than care about the safety of the one and two family dwellings where the stats show are likely to have electrical related fires. If you dont believe me check out the stats yourself on www.afcisafety.org and be sure to note the stats come from independent studies not associated with the manufacturers.
Again I am just trying to clear the air…money in terms of the small amount we are talking about should never take the place of safety. AFCI’s work and I am more than welcome to explain in very full detail WHY they work and how they work for those interested. The tripping in some isolated cases are always possible with ANY product which is why feedback is always needed. The titanic was believed to be unsinkable and we know otherwise…help build a better titanic and stop spreading myths possibly from something you hear from someone else…and if you do find a problem with a tripping AFCI it is your duty to go to www.afcisafety.org and post it on the site…we are all about makings things better and better over time.
Ok…off the soap box…lol…but really I do have a passion for these devices and in my trips around the country I hear heart breaking stories of people losing everything and I just can’t help but wonder in some of these cases what possibly an AFCI device could have done to prevent it.
Here is yet another reason for AFCI’s http://www.esasafe.com/pdf/Flash_Notices/10-01-FL.pdf
Thanks Paul for adding the one for Ontario much appreciated.
Hhhmmm … Go figure
I try to find stuff made in America. If I can’t find something made in America, my next choice is made-somewhere-that-is-NOT-China. -X
Lol…I like that concept…
