This is why the main stream media is so full of shit.
> But it does not eliminate federal taxes on Social Security. Budget reconciliation, the arcane process Senate Republicans used to pass the bill while avoiding a Democratic filibuster, does not allow changes to be made to Social Security.
**> ** > The Trump package does, however, include a temporary tax deduction of up to $6,000 for seniors ages 65 and older, and $12,000 for married seniors.
So their argument is that it doesn’t eliminate taxes. It just gives a tax deduction equal to the amount of taxes you pay up to a maximum.
Uhm. Ok, so I guess they are technically correct but it’s a distinction without a difference.
Saying the One Big Beautiful Bill doesn’t eliminate taxes on Social Security’ is like calling a bald head a ‘follicle-free lifestyle’ or a car crash a ‘kinetic realignment.’ It’s a distinction without a difference—pure spin. The tax on Social Security still exists; the bill just offers a temporary deduction that will zero out the tax for some or most seniors. It’s not a repeal, it’s a rebrand, and pretending otherwise is as absurd as calling burnt toast ‘artisanal caramelized bread.’ The reality is, the tax remains, and the deduction doesn’t help everyone or last forever but it helps most and zeroes it out.
They should say that, instead of saying they “eliminated tax on social security.” But saying the latter sounds better and will play better in campaign ads. Meanwhile, SSA phones will be lighting up when seniors get their checks with taxes still taken out.
On second thought, the SSA phones have been shut down by DOGE last I heard. This should be fun.
BS, the main stream media called out the SSA lie, because that’s what it is, a lie.
Here’s the letter that they sent out. Nowhere does it mention a temporary tax deduction of UP TO $6,000.00, but instead states:
The bill ensures that nearly 90% of social security beneficiaries will no longer pay federal income taxes on their benefits,
“the new law includes a provision that eliminates federal income taxes on social security benefits for most beneficiaries, providing relief to individuals and couples.” PERIOD
That is a bald face lie and the main stream media rightfully called it out as such.
Answer this question. Will 90% of seniors pay zero tax on their social security or not?
I’ll go ahead and answer it for you. Yes. Zero tax.
You’re quibbling about how they got there. Paying zero, is paying zero. You only get a credit up to the amount you were due to pay, so $1000 in tax $1000 in credit.
I doubt it, I say that because I don’t know what they are getting paid.
So, if a person is making 36K in SSA benefits and they get a 6K deduction on that 36K, you’re telling me they’ll pay no tax at all?
And also, where in that letter did they ever mention that it was temporary?
I’ll go ahead and answer for you. They didn’t.
So not only did they lie when they stated the new law includes a provision that eliminates federal income taxes on social security benefits for most beneficiaries, but they also failed to state that it’s temporary.
That’s basically what the main stream media told the SSA about the BS letter they sent out.
The average beneficiary gets around $1900 a month.
No, they don’t get 6k off 36k. They get 6k off due taxes. If they only get 36k as their only income, they aren’t paying anything now anyway.
If they have 30k in income/pensions/whatever plus 36k in SS, they would have paid several thousand and taxes, but with the 6k off, they will now pay zero.
The biggest group of people who will have their tax liability go down will be two seniors who are both on SS and have some other income sources but are still south of about 100k. Their total tax liability will effectively become zero.
Your words, not mine. But anyway, the new deduction increases the number of recipients who do not pay tax on their ss income from 64% to 88%, an increase of about 14 million recipients (or roughly 25% more recipients). I’m fine with that.
Bottom line, the email I received and the spin by the administration is selling a Lamborghini when people actually only got a lease on a Hyundai (no offense to Hyundai, they are fine vehicles).
Then they wouldn’t owe any taxes on their SS to begin with. SS taxes start at 25K of ones total earnings.
Really? You might want to double check that because it appears you have been mis-informed. And it’s no surprise with all the BS that’s being floated by this administration.
The 6K deduction is on the gross earnings with SS, it’s not a tax rebate or refund of 6K off what you owe. Be sure to read WHAT IT DOES and the IMPORTANT NOTE along with the information below it for clarification.
Based on the recent news regarding President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” which passed the House on July 3, 2025, seniors aged 65 and older may be eligible for a temporary $6,000 tax deduction.
Here’s a breakdown of the deduction:
Who Qualifies? Individuals aged 65 and older who meet certain income requirements.
Income Limits:
Full deduction for individuals earning up to $75,000 (modified adjusted gross income).
Full deduction for married couples earning up to $150,000 (modified adjusted gross income).
The deduction starts to phase out above these thresholds.
The deduction is fully eliminated for individuals earning over $175,000 or couples earning over $250,000.
Amount: Up to $6,000 for individuals, and up to $12,000 for married couples if both are 65 or older.
Duration: The deduction is temporary and applicable from 2025 through 2028.
What it does: It reduces your taxable income, potentially lowering your federal income tax liability.
Important note: This deduction does not eliminate or reduce taxes on Social Security benefits directly, despite some White House claims.
This deduction is a new tax break specifically for seniors and is separate from how Social Security benefits are taxed.
I already said I was fine with the extra deduction for ss recipients. It’s just not as big of a deal as what the administration is trying to sell it as though. The majority of recipients were already not paying taxes, or where paying very little tax. I’m fine with not taxing it at all across the board.
That said, we are in no position to keep reducing revenue with our current debt, and we just raised the debt ceiling by another almost 15% (and trump originally wanted the debt ceiling eliminated entirely for the duration of his term).
