Meth House Hazards and Remediation Course

Meth has touched my life in two ways. I have a nephew who will forever be a recovering addict and my wife works within the health dept. medical field and deals directly with clients in their homes. After hearing about a portion of her day, I decided, since I knew this course was offered, that I would learn what I could to pass it along to my wife and family members, both of which might need to know the signs, symptoms and the “how or how not to” deal with the immediate situation should they find themselves in the middle of it. My wife was able to make an informed judgement call and did an immediate about face and got out and made sure no one else would be caught off guard at the home.

That said, I found this course to be informative. I have some background knowledge of this, but I believe it might be more helpful to know “how to handle” a situation for people with little to no knowledge about meth rather than spending the time on “how collections should be conducted”. While informative, most inspectors will never need to know that, but may in their jurisdiction may very likely run into it.

Over all a subject worth studying on.

Sorry this is a 2nd post of the same with added content:

I currently live in an area of HIGH concentration of meth users and dealers. Law enforcement has an ongoing struggle in front of them here. It has for sure become a scary epidemic. I travel the country doing other work as well and fine that in the poorer areas, it is definitely more prevalent. Not more invasive just seems more per capita.

My wife and moved into a rental house 2 years ago. We knew the previous tenant was “troubled”, all of the walls and ceilings were painted black and there were small holes drilled through doors, walls, and the floor. We were told the previous tenant had PTSD. Since moving in my wife has been suffering with many unexplained medical problems. Even our dog has recently gone blind. Now that I have read this course I am going to peruse getting the house tested for meth residue and my wife has scheduled an appointment with her doctor to be tested as well.

I read a link to an article mentioned in an InterNACHI forum post on meth house hazards. After reading this and several other articles I am starting to believe that I have rented a former meth house. The house had many of the signs talked about and my wife has had unexplained medical problems that started shortly after we moved in. I am completing this course and will look further into testing certification so that I can prevent others from the hazards of living in a meth house

A roof truss found in the attic is broken. This can reduce the structural integrity of your roof and may eventually cause issues in the roof such as sagging and further splitting. It is recommended a contractor fix or repair as needed.

Article: Pressure-Assist Toilets

Essay: Pressure-assist toilets function through the use of compressed air that is compacted inside of a container in the tank of the toilet. When flushed, the compression acts as a spring, forcing water to run through the toilet system with much more force than a conventional gravity-driven toilet.

Make shift pipe running through the roof for possible ventilation. There was no cover at the top but was concealed from site. The interior were various stains on the floor and walls which were sprayed with starch but indication of any alarming issues.

An undermined pipe running through the roof from the garage work bench. there were yellow and brown staining on the wall. The area was sprayed with starch but no indication of any wrong doing. There were some burns in the work top and alcohol was found.

A propane bottle, one you would have around the house for grilling, is commonly used in meth labs to download ammonia. They are dangerous because they can be structurally weakened. Such tanks are being returned to stores by meth cooks and resold to the public.

Radon is a radioactive, colorless, odorless and tasteless gas. As many as 20,000 lung cancer deaths are caused each year by radon. The level of the radon-gas hazard differs from location to location. Despite its short lifetime, radon gas from natural sources can accumulate in buildings, especially, due to its high density, in low areas such as basements and crawl spaces.

Many common and not so common household items may be used in the cooking and fabrication of meth. In addition to chemicals, tubing and awkward use of bottles and containers can be indication of meth fabrication. If one encounters such items, best to remove oneself and report findings to authorities immediately.

As advised by Internachi Founder Nick Gromicko, if a meth test lab is positive, an inspector should assume the worst case scenario- that the home was a meth lab. However, only after further testing can this assumption be made conclusive.

This is two Ajax boilers that are twined together for a building that has about 40 people in during the day when I inspected them one of them does not appear to be working and the other one the tpr valve is leaking.

Along with those two Ajax boilers they have two 500 hot water holding tanks. Which is a over kill just for using them for hand washing only. I suggested in the future they might want to install electric water heaters in the bathrooms.

I learned while reading this article that Meth is a very dangerous volitile substasnce. I learned there are many ways to clean up a meth lab. I also learned that it takes many different people coming together with lots of different skills to clean up and get rid of one of these meth houses. I also learned that I wouldn’t wanna step foot near one let alone be a part of the cleanup effort. But I gained a new respect for those that clean these labs up.

I took a picture of a couple lithium batteries. I now know what to look for just in case I ever end up in a meth house. Hopefully that weill never happen to me. But I a lap realized that I use Lithium batteries with most of my power tools. I wonder if this is the reason they charge so much money for a spare lithium battery for one of my tools.

I saw a lot of lithium batteries in one location which could indicate a former meth lab. I suggest further evaluation on this. Meth residue can be a health and safety hazard for children and adults who live in a home that has had a former meth lab.

As to the image I used it shows meth stains against on a wall in a room. In order for one to know if it is truly meth you would have to spray the wall with a spray and starch to watch if the spot turn purple or bluish in color. This would be indicative of a meth house being at the location previously

I have learned that when making meth at a location the amount of waste produced is about 5 to 6 times than what it takes to create 1 batch. These chemicals can leech into the ground causing vegetation to stop completely.
