During inspection of home pipe for smoking crystal meth was found. Immediately left residence and contacted proper authorities for further inspection of the home. Serious health and safty hazard. Possible contamination of home. Noticed strong bitter odor upon entering the home.
Meth labs should inspectors call the police?
As inspectors we are not law enforcement agents and we are not legally obligated to report suspicions of such activity. We are only required to report suspicions of meth if septic tanks are in involved and we are to contact the local health department or department of natural resources for advice. However, if we discover a working meth lab we are required to call law enforcement.
This is a photo of a home that has both carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors in this course I learned that the lack of these devices could be an indicator of math being cooked on the premises these detectors would be removed allowing the cooking to take place without being detected .
Though the use of meth has declined in recent years due to the introduction of many other drugs that are easier to come by math still poses a great hazard due to the residual left over chemical residue in homes from above current meth labs and meth labs from years past that were never found. These meth labs can still pose a great health hazard to new occupants entering home especially families with young children and homes purchased by the elderly .
In the state that I live it is required that we report that we might have found a house were meth is cooked and the property will be tested by appropriate officials and if the test is positive then the house is condemned and has to be torn down
properties were meth is cooked is very dangerous and should be treated with extreme caution if you find evidence of a property that has had meth cooked in it you need to leave immediately and report to the proper authorities

I read the article on meth labs. Ive not personally come across a meth lab or suspected a property of being a former lab but wanted to expand my knowledge. Some parts of Baltimore city where I sometimes inspect are known for being involved in drug dealing.
Many items used in the process of manufacturing meth are commonly found around the home. A few items observed during a home inspection should generally not raise any concern, but being able to assess the totality of the circumstances can alert most inspectors who are familiar with common lab indicators. It is up to the inspector to be continuously educated on current and common trends and knowing how to react and handle the situation.
It is the inspectors responsibility to be familiar with recognizing a current or prior meth lab location. It is important for their safety as well as the safety of their client and anyone else who enters the home. Afterall, it is exactly why they were hired in the first place; to identify potentially dangerous conditions.

If it is located in a portion of the property where HVAC is not shared, it is possible to retain it. However, if determined to be contaminated, it must be destroyed as to prevent reuse and disposed.
