Missing Kickout Flashing?

Would this soffit rot be the direct result of missing kick out flashing? What else is needed here? Most solid, painted, wood composite material I see has this defect to some degree. But in this case, it’s especially bad in the area where the hip roof eave meets the chimney.

Anjali, that is not an area where kickout flashing, typically, would be used but it sure looks like the existing flashing is compromised and needs correction.

Larry’s on the ball.
Although I do not refer to this type of flashing as kick-out flashing.

Chimney Cricket, as opposed to Kickout flashing and Jiminy Cricket:-)

Good ole Cricket flashing! I almost forgot about this gem. And This chimney is definitely suitable for one in size.

@lkage has it. Missing cricket combined with improperly installed chimney flashing = leaks and water damage. It’s not a typical area for kick out flashing but it wouldn’t hurt to have it installed also.

You guys are deal killers! The chimney been like this for 50 years, it just needs some caulking & little paint on the underside of the soffit.

Agreed. Looks like they have been battling this for years and tried everything other than the right thing.

Not so Simon, Flex tape and Flex seal is the appropriate fix.

The plywood soffit being in direct contact with the masonry chimney is part of the problem. The plywood will wick out moisture from the brick like a sponge. I would put a piece of treated solid lumber/board between the plywood and the brick, at a minimum.

If not, you end up with this

Nice and complete Brian - including the necessary kickout flashing… I can’t think of a roof we did back in the day when I worked for Kelley’s Roofing where we did not put a kickout at both sides of a chimney - gutter contact point.

I can’t even think of a scenario (atm) where the absence of a kickout would not be a deficiency.
