Moss in the sun

The 2 out buildings I inspected had moss growing along the gable edges about a foot in on both sides of the roof one building heated and the other not. One a newer roof and the other was at its end. The ridge ends had the most and it tapered to the eaves. What is so strange about it is there are no trees to shade the buildings. Open space all around. What would cause this? This is close to lake Michigan (half mile)

Thanks John

possibly lichens?

Food and Moisture = Growth .
A Zink strip helps to control this .

You can also try this.

That is not moss. It is a lichen. Totally different.
